The Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, was the first purpose-built Formula 1 track in the United States, and it remains the crown jewel of American F1 events. If you are planning to attend, here is what you need to know.

The Track

COTA is a 5.5-kilometer circuit with 20 turns inspired by famous corners from circuits around the world. The signature feature is Turn 1 — a steep uphill braking zone that produces dramatic first-lap action every year. The multi-apex turns in the middle sector test driver precision, while the back straight offers key overtaking opportunities.

Best Viewing Spots

Choosing where to sit makes a huge difference in your experience:

  • Turn 1 (Main grandstand): The iconic uphill charge on lap one is unforgettable. Premium pricing, but worth it for first-timers.
  • Turn 12: A high-speed left-hander with excellent views of multiple corners. Great for photography.
  • Turn 15 area: Watch cars navigate technical corners with good sightlines to the big screen.
  • General admission: COTA's general admission areas offer surprisingly good views, especially around the back section of the track. Bring a blanket and arrive early.

Getting There

COTA is located about 20 minutes southeast of downtown Austin. Traffic on race day is significant, so plan accordingly:

  1. Shuttle buses run from downtown Austin and are the easiest option
  2. Ride-sharing works but expect surge pricing and long wait times after the race
  3. Parking on-site is available but expensive and slow to exit
  4. Some fans stay in nearby hotels along the I-35 corridor to reduce commute time

Beyond the Race

COTA race weekend is also a music festival. Major artists perform concerts after qualifying and the race, included in your ticket price. Past performers have included Billy Joel, Eminem, and Ed Sheeran. The fan zones feature F1 merchandise, food vendors, simulator experiences, and sometimes appearances by drivers and team personnel.

Weather and What to Bring

October in Austin can be warm. Expect temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Sunscreen, comfortable shoes, ear protection, and a portable phone charger are essentials. Most grandstands have no shade, so a hat is strongly recommended.

The COTA experience is the most authentically American F1 event on the calendar. The Texas hospitality, live music, and world-class racing create a weekend that converts casual spectators into lifelong fans.
